Copy text as formatted.

Hi and thank God and you for your efforts in making another Bible program.

With bpBible i was looking for a quick verse and search term lookup app, and bpBible seems to be filling that need. But one thing i need is the ability to copy the text as formatted, which would render italicized words in the KJV as such.

I was also looking for a way to copy in paragraph style with numbered verses, and with the reference range at the end, and although that was not exactly one of the options in the bpBible, i found that you could edit the template, and so by leaving the header blank and placing $versenumber $text in the body, and $range in the footer, i comes out like this:

1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; 3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock. 1 Peter 5:1-3

I call it "Para text with range at end." Thank God for options.

But in addition to copying as formatted, it would be nice to be able to place the text in quotation marks, and the ref in parenthesis, which is how QV can do it. It just won't put the ref at the end.

(1 Pet 5:1-3) "The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: {2} Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; {3} Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock."

An ESword option will copy paragraph style it with the ref at the end, but as a another line

Bu thank again for offering this program. For years i have mainly used E-Sword for the heavy lifting, and the last free version of QuickVerse ver. 4.0f (hard to find, made for Windows 3.1 i think) for basic look ups. It lives up to its name, but as it is only 16 bit, it will crash XP (subsytem) when my ram gets under a certain range. More recently i have been using TheWord because of its inclusion of cross references, which i am using to make a web Bible with. (http://peacebyjesus.witnesstoday.org/New_Testament_TOC.html)

Copying with formatting

Copying with formatting will be covered by http://code.google.com/p/bpbible/issues/detail?id=68. As this is a volunteer project we are unfortunately unable to give any time-frame as to when this will be done. I also don't know what implications it would have on the options for formatting verse output.

You are able to use ordinary text in the custom copy window, not just the special variables. For example, with header ", body $versenumber $text and footer " ($range, $version) I was able to get the following output:

"1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock." (1 Peter 5:1-3, KJV)

Still not perfect, but probably able to be tweaked a bit more.

Just out of interest, the first Bible software I ever used was Quickverse 3 on Windows 3.11. I haven't been able to use that for a long time.

Thanks! All i had to do

Thanks! All i had to do though was to put ($range, $version) in the footer section of Edit Template (along with my previous coding) and it worked. New challenge, how would you place the verse numbers in curly brackets? {1}

And can you run this in Linux? It looks better than what I've seen for Linux bible progs, and i run TheWord fine in Puppy using Wine.

Verse numbers in curly brackets

For wrapping a verse number in braces, use {$versenumber} rather than $versenumber.

Running BPBible on Linux

I believe that BPBible has been used successfully under Wine. It is also possible to run it natively under Linux, though it does not always work as well as the Windows version (see the instructions at http://code.google.com/p/bpbible/wiki/RunningBPBible).

Thanks again, {that} is neat!

Thanks again, {that} is neat!

As for Linux, I am in Puppy Linux now, and just installed BPBible using Wine, which went well (though in Puppy i had to find the Wine control panel and navigate to the .exe to install it, and then to run it i had to find the Wine folder in Root, with its C drive and Program files ), but unlike in Windows, when hitting the default KJV Bible it said the "This book is not set. This may be because you do not have any of this type of book installed." But getting the KJV.zip file from crosswire, moving it from tmp to the BPBible folder in Wine's Programs Files, and and using the "Install books" option worked, thank God (drag and drop did not).

Search also works, though indexing froze, as does the KJV dictionary (i muss the KJV concordance though).

To tired to pursue this more now, will get back later. Thanks again.

So for not getting back, but

So for not getting back, but i also installed the USB version of BPBible in Puppy linux using Wine,. and it runs fine, thanks be to God.

Back to copying verse, is there any way to place a quotation marks around verses in paragraph mode?

Edit: I found by putting " in Footer and " ($range) in Footer that this works, except that it places a space btwn the first " and ref number, as in " {16} Rejoice evermore." (1 Thessalonians 5:16)

More suggestions:

Sometimes I do a lot of searches, and it would also be faster if the abbreviations for books were reduced to 2 consonants, like rv for Revelation or rm for Romans, rather than rom. Most are only two, like like for Luke, but for some reason others are not.

Having the Bible in paragraph mode separated into translators paragraphs would also be helpful. i think.

Also, and only for convenience and speed, would be to select the text in the search bar whenever you 1st place your cursor in it. If the search window is open, and if i switch to another window then it selects it, but if i close the search window and then open it again, then the last search string is still there, which it should be, but placing your cursor in it does not select the search words, and so you must do so in order to type new string in it. Clicking 3 times fast will only select one word in it.

Likewise the "go to verse" box should select the text whenever you 1st place your cursor in it.

Having a smaller search window, and that would co-exist with the main Bible text when a result is selected, as in E-sword, would also be better.

No big deal. Thanks for all your work.

Suggestions

I'm sorry, I don't know what you mean by "translators paragraphs" (unless you mean the pilcrows in the KJV). BPBible does show paragraphs where they are marked in the text and the options are not set to "One line per verse". Could you please elaborate?

Selecting the full text could certainly be a good idea (it does it sometimes, but apparently not all the time). I usually search with the 's' key, and navigate with the 'g' key, and so never noticed it.

By having the search window smaller, do you mean something like described at http://code.google.com/p/bpbible/issues/detail?id=14? As for co-existing, do you mean not going away automatically when you double click on a search result? If so, I think there are benefits both ways (I used to find it highly annoying in e-Sword that you would double click on something, but you then couldn't read the verse in the context because the search window was still there). There is an option, disappear_on_doubleclick, which can change this behaviour, though unfortunately I don't think it is exposed through the user interface.

Greetings in Jesus. By

Greetings in Jesus. By "translators paragraphs" i meant like in TheWord (http://www.theword.gr) which is good (many options), but i like BPBible for faster searches and basic copying. I do use "BPBible in paragraph mode vs. "One line per verse" but the whole chapter is one big paragraph. Where TheWord got its paragraphed text, , and with cross references, i know not.

I do sometimes search with the 's' key, but often i want to change the Search options.

As for co-existing, that link describes it, i meant being able to see the search result in the main text window by moving the search window, which you can do in e-Sword now, and even and copy from the main window while the search window is up.

As it is, the BPBible search window does disappear upon dbl clicking a result.

Thanks for trying to make it better, and it does not seem that you have much help. i do not know really anything about software coding, so may God give you needed help!.

Book name abbreviations

The book name abbreviations are largely based on work by CrossWire. I cannot immediately think of anything wrong with having shorter abbreviations (apart from the fact that you greatly increase the chance of having collisions), but I have asked the question of the CrossWire developers and will be interested to see what response I receive.

Book name abbreviations

E-Sword seems much the same, but in both it seems to be mainly Romans and Revelation which could be changed to the most minimally intuitive, while restricting all to 2 consonants would not be reasonable, as in cases like Neh or Ezek, while and Philemon is more difficult.

Adding additional abbreviations for books

It is possible to add additional abbreviations for books to the locale configuration file. To add these two, for example, you do the following:
1. Find the relevant locale file. In the case of English, that is locales\locales.d\SWORD_1512\bpbible.conf.
2. Find the "Book Abbrevs" section of the file. It will be filled with lots of abbreviations such as:

1 C=1Cor
1 CHRONICLES=1Chr
1 CORINTHIANS=1Cor
1 JN=1John
...

3. Add RV=Rev and RM=Rom into the appropriate place in alphabetical order.

After this you will be able to use Rv and Rm as well. I've put a sample locale file with those changes made at http://sites.google.com/site/jmmorganswordmodules/Home/bpbible.conf. If you put it in the locale directory mentioned above that should work.

Thanks! That is neat and it

Thanks! That is neat and it works, and now i could add others, if needed, and if they do not conflict. Thank God we can tweak.
